The Students’ Union of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, has voted the University of Ilorin as the best University in Nigeria and named the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), Academic Icon of the Year.
Presenting the twin awards to the Vice-Chancellor in his office penultimate Friday (June 12, 2015), the institution’s Students’ Union President, Comrade Sanya-Olu Raji, who led other students of the Polytechnic to Ilorin, said that the Vice-Chancellor had distinguished himself from among his peers as “an astute Veterinary Surgeon, outstanding understanding icon and a nation builder per excellence”.
Sanya-Olu said, “Sir, we are indeed so proud of the outstanding achievements of this great citadel of learning and the successes the staff and students have recorded so far in all disciplines, which have brought several honours and recognition to your institution”.
Pointing out that Prof. Ambali has transformed the University beyond human imagination and has set the pace for others to follow, the Ibadan Poly student leader said, “The achievements of this reputable institution in the areas of Information and Communication Technology, research, standard academic calendar, staff training and welfare, peaceful co-existence, infrastructural development, expansion of academic programmes and successes of your students are worthy of emulation and serve as reasons for this recognition”.
Sanya-Olu, who commended Unilorin students and staff members for their unwavering support for the Vice-Chancellor, said, “I congratulate the Academic Icon, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, as well as the management of the best University in Nigeria 2015, for we have heard, we have seen and we have concurred. I urge you to continue with this tempo while we have every reason to appraise you”.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the students’ body for the recognition, noting that the staff of the University of Ilorin are focused and have ensured that the philosophy of the University is kept alive.
He told the students that Unilorin had been the most sought-after in the country in the last three years, adding that the University intends to increase access to education without compromising standard.
Prof. Ambali stressed that the University of Ilorin does not tolerate cultism, examination malpractices and stealing, noting that the University students are well behaved.
